Appeal for witnesses after Ottery crash

Police received reports of a collision between a Yellow Ford Focus and a Toyota 4x4 in Wiggaton, Ottery St Mary at around 4.30pm on Friday 13 February.

It is believed that the Ford then failed to stop following the collision and fled the scene. The car was later discovered that evening in a burnt out state on Burscombe Lane.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision to come forward, we would also like to hear from anyone who has information relating to the whereabouts of the Yellow Ford Escort following the crash, prior to being discovered in its burnt out state...

Toddler in toilet seat horror!

Devon firefighters had an unusal emergency call out - to a toddler with a trainer toilet seat stuck on his head.

One fire appliance from Ottery St Mary was sent to Brackendown, West Hill, Ottery at 8.17pm tonight (Saturday) to deal with the incident.

The fire crew were able to remove the toilet seat from the child's head. The child was uninjured.

Family pay tribute to man killed in collision

Police are appealing for witnesses and information after a fatal road traffic collision on the B3180 near Daisy Mount, Ottery St Mary on Monday 24 November 24.

The incident happened shortly before 10pm on Monday when a blue Ford Mondeo car was involved in a collision with a male pedestrian outside of the West Hill Nursery.

The pedestrian, who died at the scene following the collision, has been named by police as Robert James Mullen, 42, from West Hill near Ottery St Mary.

Every year on November 5th for reasons lost in antiquity, the Flaming Tar Barrels are carried through the streets of Ottery St Mary to the delight of thousands of townsfolk and visitors.

Doubt cast on plans to capture Devon beavers

Government plans to capture wild Devon beavers have been cast into doubt after Freedom of Information requests by Friends of the Earth revealed that Public Health England (PHE) does not believe the animals would increase risk to human health from disease.

The Government says that the beavers should be captured because of fears that the beavers living in the River Otter near Exeter would increase the risk to human health from the tapeworm, Echinococcus multilocularis. Friends of the Earth has called for an immediate halt to Government plans to capture wild beavers on the River Otter in Devon, warning that any such moves may be unlawful. East Devon community backs beavers

An East Devon community has given its backing to a local population of wild beavers.

160 people attended a ‘beaver meeting’ in Ottery St Mary on Tuesday 19 August. The meeting had been specially convened by the Devon Wildlife Trust in an attempt to give everyone what the charity called, ‘a chance to make their views known about the future of their new and unusual neighbours.’

New Measures designed to help home and business owners protect their properties from future flood events were approved by East Devon District Council’s (EDDC) Cabinet meeting this week.
