Unique Exeter painting sold for fire fundraising

A painting depicting everyday life in Exeter’s Southernhay district has been auctioned to raise funds for a new cultural tribute after the Cathedral Yard fire.

Property Search Group wanted to bring together the city’s law firms to raise money by commissioning and auctioning the painting, created by Devon artist and illustrator Sara Nunan.

Solicitors and colleagues gathered at the Mercure Exeter Southgate on Thursday (March 30) for the auction, conducted by TV’s Homes under the Hammer auctioneer Scott Gray.

Featuring city landmarks, national landscapes and the work of the English visionary Cecil Collins, the new exhibition of Exeter’s Fine Art starting at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) on Saturday 24 October will delight art lovers.

Drawn from RAMM’s extensive collection of topographical prints, drawings and watercolours, distinctive city landmarks include Mol’s Coffee House and the Higher Market. Flower painting inspires designer at Toby Buckland’s Garden Festival

Police are investigating a theft of an original Caroline Shotton painting from Castle Gallery in Exeter's Cathedral Yard on Saturday 13 December.

This was an original painting valued at £1,250 and was glazed in a white frame, approximately 40cm X 40cm in size, although it may have been removed from the frame or reframed.

If anyone recognises this picture, has bought it recently or seen it advertised for sale in any way, please contact the police on 101 quoting crime reference CR/130108/14, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Newtown Art Café to feature music from the J Strings and Exeter Young Strings

Newtown Community Association is gearing up for an Art Café, which will take place this Sunday, 9 June at the main hut in Belmont Park from 2pm-4pm.

As well as a painting activity with Exeter Scrapstore, there will be live music mostly from young string player 'The J Strings' – which is the St James School string group – Exeter Young Strings, and also a young string band will be doing a few tunes.

After that, there will be an open session for anyone to play a few tunes.
