Hate crime has no place in Exeter, Exeter City Council said today, following reports of migrant communities being abused in the city.
Hate crime has risen by 57% across the country since the result of the EU Referendum, according to the National Police Chiefs’ Council.
Cllr Paul Bull, Lead Councillor for Communities and Neighbourhoods, said there had already been reports that migrant communities were being verbal abused and physically attacked in Exeter since last Thursday.
Devon and Cornwall Police are offering alternative contact methods rather than calling 101.
The summer months see a huge increase in visitor numbers and the police typically see a 35% increase in calls compared to the quietest times of the year. With the same number of call handlers year round, this extra demand inevitably can have an impact on call waiting times.
People can now complete an online non-urgent crime report or use the ‘contact an officer’ facility, which will be dealt with in the same way as a call to 101, but can often be quicker and more convenient for busy...
Police are appealing for witnesses following an assault on Lea Road, Tiverton.
The incident took place around 9.30pm on Friday 24th June opposite the entrance to the Tesco Express car park.
A confrontation took place between the occupants of a Red Volkswagon and a dark coloured Ford Mondeo on Lea Road. A 29-year-old man received minor injuries and a 42-year old woman was arrested and question in connection to this matter.
She has since been bailed until the 1st August pending further enquires.

Police are appealing for witnesses following an unprovoked assault in Dawlish on Saturday 18th June.
The incident took place between 9:20 and 10pm.
Two men and a woman left the Mount Pleasant Inn at around 9.20pm on Saturday 18th June and walked up Mount Pleasant Road. When the three went to cross the zebra crossing, a red Nissan Micra drove at the pedestrians in dangerous manners, which lead to the group having to jump out of the way.
The 21-year-old woman in the group suffered a broken ankle following this incident.
Police investigating an assault on a man at a taxi rank in Newton Abbot and are appealing for information.
Three men approached the victim on Queen Street, near Lloyds Bank, on Wednesday 4 May 2016 at around 6.30pm.
The 41-year-old local man was punched to the ground and the men continued to attack him.
The suspects stole a pair of sunglasses and some clothing from the victim that he had just purchased, and then ran off in the direction of Lloyds Bank.
The victim suffered chest and facial injuries as a result and he received treatment at Torbay Hospital....
Fraudsters who preyed on vulnerable people across the UK and Channel Islands, by stealing money from their bank accounts, have been jailed.
Six offenders, aged between 21 and 45, have been jailed for a total of more than 20 years at Bristol Crown Court for their crime, which involved duping more than £1.3m from vulnerable and elderly victims, including many living in the south west of England. A small safe has been stolen from St Mary’s Cottages, Exeter Street in Dawlish.
The burglary took place between 10am and 6pm on Thursday 9th June.
The burglar entered the property through a front groundfloor window, stealing the safe from inside.
The safe is a black ‘Sentry’ fireproof model, about the size of a home printer with a handle and a key lock on the front.
Police are keen to speak to anyone who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area, and ask the public to be aware than the safe and its contents may have been dumped.
Devon and Cornwall police are investigating the death on an 8-month-old boy in Brownhills Road, Newton Abbot.
A spokesperson for Devon & Cornwall Police said: "Officers were called by the ambulance just after 10.30am this morning (15th June) informing us of the death.
"Police and scenes of crime officers have attended the house to undertake initial investigations and we are currently treating the death as unexplained.
"A 27-year-old man is in police custody in connection with this matter and awaits questioning."
