Devon County Council is reminding users of Household Waste Recycling Centres to think about the waste they are taking to the sites to avoid wasting the time of council staff and that of the emergency services. It follows the temporary closure of the Knowle Hill Recycling Centre in Exmouth on Wednesday after an unknown chemical was dumped in the main bay at the centre. For the safety of the public the centre was evacuated and closed for a few hours and the fire service were called. The site reopened once the chemical – which turned out to be sheep dip – was removed. Recycling Centres aren’t...

More than 2,000 pledges to recycle food waste has been made by Devon residents, thanks to a prize draw.
Last month Devon residents were given the chance to win a composting bin - if they pledged online to compost their kitchen or garden waste.

Coffee lovers are being encouraged to drink from reusable cups when getting their take-outs in Exeter. Exeter City Council’s Recycling department will be handing out free limited edition Denis the Dustcart KeepCups at a series of giveaway events around the city. The aim is that people will use the cups as a cup for life. Disposable coffee cups are a big problem. Two and a half billion are thrown away every year. That’s around 7 million thrown away every day in the UK – or 5 thousand every minute. If stacked one inside the other, after a year they’d reach 25,000KM into space. The...
Residents have been playing their part in improving street cleanliness, with the first monthly winner of Teignbridge District Council’s ‘Operation Stack’ recycling campaign announced.
Mrs Sylvia Mills from Kingskerswell was drawn as November’s winner of a recycling goody bag, containing a set of recycling wine glasses, leftover recipe book and various food waste reducers. The campaign has already seen over 400 thank you cards randomly issued to residents who have been stacking their recycling boxes and food waste containers on collection days.
An Exeter resident has won £200 in a prize draw aimed at encouraging people to recycle more.
Marie Pistorius won the cash after she took her earthenware slow cooker to Pinbrook Road Recycling Centre’s shop for reuse.
The draw was one of four held in April and May aimed at inspiring more people to recycle Waste Electronic & Electrical Equipment (WEEE). Just 30 per cent of all unwanted ‘small’ electrical items in the UK are recycled.
The prizes were sponsored by the Waste Electronic & Electrical Equipment (WEEE) Industry’s Distributor Takeback Scheme.
Devon County Council is championing the very first REUSE week this coming May 16th-22nd.
Residents from all over Devon are being urged to repair, refurbish and reuse more.
REUSE week is all about giving the things we own a new lease of life – by repairing, refurbishing, repurposing or passing them on to someone. It’s also about highlighting the treasure trove that is second-hand and pre-loved items.
One of the highlights of the week will be the UK premiere of the documentary REUSE! in conjunction with Transition Exeter.
