Exeter recycling scheme reaches major £10k milestone

Exeter City Football Club (ECFC) and Exeter City Council’s innovative recycling scheme, Cans4City, has reached a major milestone.

The scheme, which encourages Exeter football fans to recycle used drink cans whilst also raising money for charity, has now raised more than £10,000 with all funds raised going towards projects and initiatives run both by the football club and its partner charity Exeter City Community Trust (ECCT).

DCW launches vape recycling service to tackle growing e-cig waste problem

Leading South West independent waste management firm DCW has launched a new disposable vape recycling service in a bid to divert potentially hazardous waste away from landfill.

Expanding its existing Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) recycling service, DCW can now provide businesses with a 23-litre caddy so that disposable vape users can recycle the casing and batteries of vapes responsibly.

University of Exeter and Hospiscare team up to recycle Christmas trees for the third year running

The University of Exeter and Hospiscare have teamed up once again to recycle Christmas trees and support terminally ill people and their families.

Hospiscare’s vans collected trees from households across Exeter, Exmouth, Honiton, Tiverton, Sidmouth and Ottery St Mary on 13th and 14thJanuary, in exchange for a £10 donation.

Trees were then taken to the University’s Streatham Campus to be chipped by the Grounds Team and the chippings have been used as mulch for the university’s shrub beds.

Another area added to Exeter's food waste scheme

Another part of Exeter will get food waste collections later this month, as the council continues its gradual rollout across the city.

Properties in the St Loyes ward will receive new caddies this week. Collections will begin in the week commencing Monday 23 January.

The first phase of the scheme began in 2021, with 1,300 properties in Alphington receiving weekly food waste collections. The rest of Alphington and 2,000 properties in Beacon Heath and Pinhoe were added last year.

Specsavers launches groundbreaking recycling initiative

PEOPLE in Exeter can be part of an important environmental initiative by recycling their glasses and contact lenses for free.

The Specsavers scheme comes after stores teamed up with recycling experts MYgroup to install recycling collection boxes.

Customers at Specsavers Exeter will be able to drop off metal and plastic glasses and sunglasses, as well as contacts lenses and accessories, including blister packs, contact lens cases and solution bottles.

Waste firm invests £290K to strengthen the South West’s circular economy

In a bid to strengthen the South West’s circular economy and to tackle throwaway culture, a leading waste management and recycling company has invested £290,000 in machinery and facilities at its specialist plastics reprocessing centre.

DCW, the Zero to Landfill firm based in Exeter, has introduced a new 10,000ltr fountain blender, an extruder machine and a mezzanine to its Marsh Barton plastics recycling and reprocessing plant, DCW Polymers. Charity litter pickers at major Plymouth festival receive over £7,500 from DCW

Charity litter pickers who volunteered to keep the Plymouth Hoe tidy during and after the 1 Big Summer music festival have received over £7,500 from DCW for their efforts.

Independent South West-based waste management firm, DCW, was contracted to provide waste management services for the three-day event which welcomed up to 15,000 ticket holders each day. Residents urged not to leave glass beside full recycling banks

People in Exeter are being encouraged not to leave glass bottles around recycling banks in the city and to take them home instead if the banks are full.

The request comes following the breakdown of the Council’s glass collection lorry.

Cllr Ruth Williams, Lead Councillor for Recycling & Waterways, apologised for the inconvenience the breakdown has caused. She said: “We are doing everything we can to clear glass from sites around the city and to limit the impact this will have on residents, but please do not leave your glass on the floor around the banks.”
