Describing it as “a great all-round experience” the RAMM Cafe has received a Gold Award in the Taste of the West Hospitality and Retail Awards 2013. The judges went on the say that the food was great local food, the prices fair, the surroundings clean and comfortable and the staff smiley.

First Flight at RAMM

Come along, investigate birds and their habitats. Make a bird of your choice and its nest or special home environment. Afternoon tours will be held by members of the RSPB.

Call in when you like and stay as long as you like. All children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult. Accompanying adults can watch/supervise for free. Some activities are messy so do wear clothes that can get dirty. If an activity is busy there may be a short wait.

Find out about some of the animals that live on Dartmoor. Get creative, paint or make your own view of the moor – it could be a bird’s eye view or perhaps that of a mouse.

Steve Knightley to perform at Ramm

Singer-songwriter and museum patron Steve Knightley returns to Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum on the evening of Thursday 20 June to sing songs from the English countryside.

The special solo performance will be a mix of his own and traditional folk songs: an evening of haunting music with powerful lyrics, inspired by the people and landscape of Steve’s native West Country.

Framing Widgery

Thanks to the Friends of Exeter Museums & Art Gallery, paintings of Dartmoor in RAMM’s forthcoming Widgery exhibition will be displayed in beautifully gilded frames.

The frames are being conserved by a small team of conservators and conservation students in the RAMM Conservation Laboratories between 28 May and 3 June and their progress can be followed on storify, or on Twiitter #moorgold.

An Evening To Remember: Fine Food And Music At Ramm

Mammoth tooth discovered in East Devon river

It’s not often you stumble across a 20,000-year-old mammoth tooth while carrying out a routine task at work, but that’s exactly what happened to Environment Agency officer Simon McHugh.

Simon was checking riverbank erosion near Newton Poppleford in East Devon when he noticed the massive molar sitting on the bed of the River Otter. Experts at London’s Natural History Museum have confirmed the unusual find as a mammoth tooth dating from the last Ice Age.

Art lovers will be able to see the best contemporary portraiture at Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) from Saturday 9th February when the winners and selected entries from the BP Portrait Award 2012 go on display.

Stone Axe Hammer - just passing through

RAMM’s geologist is helping research a stone axe hammer found in Lydford in the 1960s. Its finder recently brought the axe to the Devon Finds Liaison Officer for identification.

She turned to RAMM to help examine the stone to determine where it came from and to formally record it with the South West Museums Implement Petrology Group.
