40 per cent of students want to start a business

Almost half of UK graduates and students from the South West (40%) have aspirations to set up their own business after leaving University according to new research from Lloyds TSB Commercial , with many citing excitement and a sense of autonomy as key motivating factors . Furthermore, half of the region’s graduates (50%) and students (50%) who want to start up, hope to do so in the next five years – compared to last year when just over a third (33% and 43% respectively) wanted to start up their own business in a similar time frame.

Massive support for grandparent carers in the South West

New poll findings from YouGov commissioned by charities Grandparents Plus, the Family and Parenting Institute and Family Lives show huge backing for better financial and practical help for grandparents raising children because their parents can’t look after them.

TUC warns government: don't forget the SW

The TUC has warned the government not to forget the South West when it implements Lord Heseltine's report on boosting regional growth.

Commenting ahead of the report, which will be published tomorrow (Wednesday), Nigel Costley, the South West TUC's regional secretary, said it must recognise the role of government in reducing equality between and within regions so recovery takes place all over the country, not just parts of London and the South East.

World Stroke Day highlights the importance of recognising TIA signs

Thousands of people are at risk of stroke because they fail to recognise the signs of a Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA, also known as mini-stroke), according to the findings of a new poll(i) launched today on World Stroke Day (29th October 2012).

A Stroke Association survey of over 183 members of the public in the South West, conducted by ICM Research, revealed that:

Charity ball in aid of Action against Medical Accidents

Over 180 guests joined St John’s Chambers, the largest Set in the South West with over 80 barristers at their charity ball in aid of ‘Action against Medical Accidents’ (AvMA). The event raised more than £6,000 for the independent charity, which promotes better patient safety and justice for people who have been affected by a medical accident and is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Earlier this year the chambers organised a golf day at The Bristol Golf Club sponsored by Withy King raising £4,000, giving a total of over £10,000 for AvMA.

South West businesses are failing to take crucial steps to boost their productivity, according to a new report from Lloyds Banking Group and the Manufacturing Technologies Association.
