Visit Exeter - a new brand for the city - is being launched today (29 March).

Exeter City Council’s tourism team will launch its new identity at the iconic Royal Albert Memorial Museum.

Exeter Quay footbridge reopens

The Mallison footbridge at Exeter Quay has re-opened to pedestrians and cyclists following temporary repairs to the structure.

Exeter City Council was forced to close the bridge earlier in the month because of safety concerns after an inspection revealed some rotten timbers.

The bridge carries pedestrians and cyclists over a leat beside the River Exe, from nearby Exeter Antiques Centre on the Quay to Samuel Jones Smoke & Ale House on the opposite bank.

The Council will look at a permanent replacement as part of a potential enhancement to the riverside walk....

Exeter enjoys boom in visitor numbers

Exeter has seen a significant increase in visitor numbers and spend. Major events such as the Rugby World Cup 2015 and the European Rugby 7’s have raised the profile of the city nationally and internationally, placing it firmly on the map as a cultural and sporting destination.

Data provided by The South West Research Company Ltd for 2015 showed that staying domestic visitors increased by 5% to 423,000 compared to 2014 and spend by 12% to £86,302,000 on the previous year. Overseas visitors increased by 12% to 631,000.

Dawlish gets ready to ramble!

The pretty South Devon coastal town of Dawlish is readying itself for walkers of all ages and abilities as its inaugural walking festival gets ready to ramble from the start of April.

Lasting ten days and commencing on 1st April, the festival will offer more than 30 walks, most of which are free to join. Incorporating a variety of special interests and walks of different lengths, the Festival will take in pretty lanes, the South West Coast Path, woodlands, beaches and much more. Business views on Visit Devon needed

The Devon Tourism Partnership*, which promotes Devon under the 'Visit Devon' brand, is currently determining the future direction of the county’s promotion, domestically and internationally, and looking for businesses to tell them where they’d like their efforts concentrated. Local businesses have until Friday 17th July to complete the survey.

Activity is funded from partners’ own budgets, with no additional income available from central government, so spend has to be carefully considered.

Flybe, the Exeter-based airline, has re-introduced a series of ‘sun route’ flights to Alicante, Malaga and Faro to coincide with the first Bank Holiday of 2015.

The routes to Spain and Portugal from Exeter have started ahead of the Easter break and operate until late September with a frequency of up to four per week from May when Palma Majorca is also introduced into the Flybe schedule.

Historic Custom House set to reopen as visitor centre

Exeter's famous Custom House is set to become the centre of attention once again as a visitor and interpretation centre celebrating the history of the Quay and Canal.

The landmark building, which for centuries was used to collect taxes on goods entering the city, has in recent times been not been used to its full potential or underoccupied. Exeter City Council, the owner of the building, has for some years been exploring various options for its long-term sustainable use.

Heart of Devon celebrates record awards win

Tourism businesses in Exeter and the Heart of Devon enjoyed a record haul of trophies coming top in 10 of the 18 awards categories and scooping 22 accolades in all, at the Visit Devon Awards 2014.

The awards were hosted by Radio Devon’s Judi Spiers at The Palazzo at Highbullen Hotel Golf and Country Club, Umberleigh, and cover the whole county.

Altogether, Exeter and the Heart of Devon Tourism Partnership members collected 10 Gold awards, along with the prestigious Winner of Winners Award, won by the Thelma Hulbert Gallery, in Honiton.

A new website has been created to help visitors and residents get out and explore Devon’s green spaces, promoting everything from a gentle woodland stroll to an invigorating bike ride, from spotting our celebrated wildlife to discovering ancient geology.
