Unite Community members from across Devon will be starting a summer long campaign today (Thursday 18 June), to highlight cuts to community hospital beds with a protest outside County Hall in Exeter. Plans have been put forward to replace community hospital beds in Devon with a system of home care called “care closer to home”. Concerns are mounting that the loss of the beds will leave elderly and vulnerable patients recovering from operations and other treatments isolated, as well as putting pressure on over stretched critical wards at district hospitals. ‘Transport for Your Community’ is co-ordinating its second Community Transport Awareness Week across Devon next week (Monday 8 June – Sunday 14 June).

Community Transport helps people across Devon, especially those in rural parts of the county, that may live miles from the nearest bus route, or are unable to afford taxi fares or are physically unable to use the public transport services provided.

Public transport proposals revised

More than half of public transport passenger trips planned to be cut in Devon are now proposed to be restored, following widespread public consultation.

Devon County Council had originally planned to reduce passenger trips by almost 400,000 this year to save £1.7 million, but it is now proposing to reduce this to just under 170,000 after talking to communities across the county.

Ring & Ride celebrates 25 years

Ring & Ride services in Devon celebrated their 25th anniversary at a special event on Sunday 17 May.

More than 200 guests who are involved with the service were invited to a Silver Jubilee celebration which was held at Seale Hayne in Newton Abbot.

Ring & Ride was set up in response to new legislation at the time which gave local authorities powers to meet the travel needs of elderly and disabled people, and in April 1990, Honiton became the first market town in Devon to launch a Ring & Ride service.

Prospective councillors disappoint

A group campaigning for better travel solutions in the south west areas of Exeter has asked all prospective councillors for Cowick, Alphington and St Thomas for their views on key issues such as whether or not they support a review of proposed measures, including a park and ride on the site of Oaklands Riding School. Gregory Distribution in new acquisition

Leading South West distribution group Gregory Distribution (Holdings) Ltd. has acquired the business of Framptons Transport Services Ltd based in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, through the purchase of its parent company PF Holdings Ltd. for an undisclosed sum.

Transport Minister John Hayes has given a commitment that Department for Transport and Highways Agency staff will work with Devon County Council and the Blackdowns AONB to build much needed improvements to the A303/A30.

Stagecoach Group is one of the top 20 most admired businesses in the UK, according to an authoritative annual survey of corporate reputation.

The transport group, which operates bus and rail services in the UK and North America, was rated 20th out of nearly 240 businesses across 24 sectors in the Britain’s Most Admired Companies (BMAC) 2014 Awards.
