Exeter lawyers get knitting for Age UK

A 15-strong team of knitters from law firm Stephens Scown LLP have been brandishing their needles in aid of the Exeter office’s chosen charity, Age UK Exeter. Stephens Scown’s knitting club has knitted as many little woolly hats as possible for the Exeter branch of Age UK, in support of the charity’s nationwide campaign “the Big Knit”. The club, comprised of 15 knitters of mixed experience, have knitted 375 hats in total. Rugby clubs to benefit from RWC 2015 legacy

Rugby clubs across England and Wales are benefiting from the legacy of Rugby World Cup 2015 through the distribution of equipment used during the Tournament.

Working closely with the RFU and WRU to ensure that as many clubs as possible are benefiting, 392 clubs in England and 45 clubs in Wales were offered equipment that was used at the venues, ranging from tables and chairs to fencing, lockers and bar furniture.

Right to rent checks introduced for landlords

The Government has announced today that from 1 February 2016, all private landlords in England will have to check new tenants have the right to be in the UK before renting out their property.

Under the new rules, landlords who fail to check a potential tenant’s ‘Right to Rent’ will face penalties of up to £3,000 per tenant.

The new law will mean that private landlords, including those who sub-let or take in lodgers, must check the right of prospective tenants to be in the country to avoid being hit with a penalty.

Stagecoach wins top industry award

Transport operator Stagecoach has been named the best large bus operator in Britain.

The company’s operation in the south-west of England was named Large Bus Operator of the Year at the 2015 Route One Operator Excellence Awards in Birmingham.

It is the second consecutive year that a Stagecoach company has been awarded the Large Operator of the Year title after Stagecoach Midlands won the same accolade last year.

Appeal to trace relatives of Bradford man

The Bradford Coroner is appealing for information to trace Devon relatives of Edward Ireland, 69, who died in Bradford on 28 September.

Mr Ireland died of natural causes at his home in Farside Green with no suspicious circumstances. It is thought that he has relatives living in the Devon and Bath areas.

Any relatives, or anyone who has information about his next of kin, should contact Symone Holmes at the Bradford Coroner’s Office on: 01274 475299.

Warning over counterfeit RWC tickets

With less than a month to go until Rugby World Cup 2015 kicks-off in England and Cardiff, fans are being warned to only buy from official sources after the discovery of counterfeit Rugby World Cup 2015 tickets in circulation.

The City of London Police are working with Tournament Organisers, England Rugby 2015, and Tournament Owners, Rugby World Cup Limited, to carry out a full investigation to help ensure that fans are made aware. An image of one of the counterfeit tickets can be downloaded here.

Scientists to host dementia information day

Leading South West dementia scientists will come together on Thursday 3 September to hold a free public event in Devon to discuss current dementia research.

The day will involve short talks from clinicians and researchers, as well as interactive workshops and an opportunity to ask the experts questions about Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

The meeting is organised by members of the Alzheimer’s Research UK South West Network Centre in partnership with the National Institute for Health Clinical Research Network (CRN) for the South West peninsula.
