Legal Helpdesk wins Attorney General Pro Bono Prize

University of Exeter law students have been awarded the prize for Best New Student Pro Bono Activity by the Attorney General Dominic Grieve QC MP for its legal helpdesk that provides assistance to court users.

The Community Legal Helpdesk is run by Law students who are supervised by a qualified lawyer, providing free information and guidance to members of the public involved in legal disputes. Family, small claims housing and employment problems are the most common queries.

Superfast model brain to predict flooding during heavy rain

Heavy rain has once again resulted in widespread flooding across the country. With climate change likely to cause further severe weather events in the coming years, methods of quickly predicting flooding will become increasingly important.

A team of engineers and scientists from the University of Exeter has developed a model, 1,000 times faster than existing flood prediction systems, which can rapidly predict when and where flooding will occur. Drama has become a regular activity for Exeter’s young people in care who have joined forces with students from the University of Exeter to stage a play in Austin, Texas. Stetsons and cowboy boots are at the ready as Exeter’s creative gang of performers head to the United States. This life-changing experience will be the first time that the theatre company ‘Perfectly Mixed Up’ travel and perform outside of Devon. In the last 12 months alone, businesses being incubated by a partnership of five UK universities have raised some £30m in investment.

Beetroot juice – the winning formula for team sports

New research shows that drinking beetroot juice can significantly improve performance in team sports involving bouts of high intensity exercise.

Trials by the University of Exeter Sport and Health Sciences department have found a direct link between the high nitrate content of beetroot and the chemical processes needed to get muscles working at their most efficient during intermittent bursts of activity.

University students set to raise funds for Exmouth RNLI

Students from the University of Exeter have plans to set up a fundraising branch on campus for their local lifeboat station. In addition, two other groups from the University already have events planned at the end of March specifically to support the launch and recovery vehicle appeal at Exmouth RNLI.

The second annual Xpression FM Charity football match is taking place on Sunday 17 March.

The match is being held on the Rubber crumb at the University of Exeter Sports Park and will feature a team of pundits from the University’s radio station taking on a team of University staff including lecturers and SABBs.

The event will raise money for the Adam Stansfield Foundation, a local charity set up in honour of the former Exeter city striker who tragically died of bowel cancer in 2010.
