Having put in the hard yards off the field during a gruelling pre-season programme, it's on-field matters that take centre stage for the Exeter Chiefs tomorrow as the countdown to the new season edges ever closer.
This weekend Rob Baxter's side travel to Wales to face Scarlets in their opening pre-season fixture at the Parc Y Scarlets (3pm). It represents the first of three warm-up clashes for the Devon club - Bristol and Glasgow Warriors follow over the next two weeks – before they engage in their fourth season of Aviva Premiership action at Northampton Saints on Saturday,...
Devon and Somerset firefighters have appealed to councillors over the decision to allow fire chief Lee Howell to work part time and begin as a fire advisor in Wales.
Representatives from the Fire Brigades Union have written asking for an explanation and expressing their ‘grave concern’ over the decision, which will see Howell working for the Welsh Government two days a week.
In the letter, Brigade Secretary, Trevor French, said: “The decision to grant permission for the Chief Fire Officer to undertake part time work is outrageous, wrong and a kick in the teeth for the hard...

As of yesterday, same-sex couples will be able to get married in England and Wales after new measures became law.
This movement has been welcomed by the more accepting population of England and Wales, and perhaps opened the eyes of those less supportive.
The Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrat leaderships all backed the proposals, which were finally approved by MPs and peers earlier this week.
Maria Miller, the equalities minister, said marriage would remain the “bedrock” of society but would now be open to same-sex couples as well as heterosexuals.
Hundreds of thousands of women across England and Wales could be spared the distress and uncertainty of a breast cancer diagnosis by taking a daily pill to help prevent the disease. Updated guidance by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) says the NHS should give tamoxifen or raloxifene to particular groups of women with a family history of cancer [1] because the drugs can help stop them getting breast cancer if they are taken for five years.
Roughly 50,000 women and 400 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the UK [2], making it the most common...
Arrests of girls by Devon and Cornwall Police have fallen by 35 per cent in three years, figures obtained by the Howard League for Penal Reform reveal today (19 March).
Devon and Cornwall officers made 813 arrests of girls aged 17 and younger during 2011 – a significant drop compared to 2008, when 1,247 arrests were recorded.
It comes after the Howard League launched a campaign aimed at keeping as many children as possible out of the criminal justice system.
Across England and Wales, police arrest almost 100 girls a day, although the overall number has almost halved...
