Initiated by the Archbishop of Canterbury and Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster, bishops across the country have been encouraged this week to pray for and visit community projects which address growing poverty in Britain.

As a response to this the Bishop of Crediton, Rt Revd Nick McKinnel, and Chair of the Methodist District, Revd Pete Pillinger, visited the Exeter hub of the Devon and Cornwall Food Association (DCFA) on 7 April.

The bishop praised the project and said: “This encouraging scheme is obviously making such a difference to so many local people’s lives and...

Changes to recycling and rubbish collections in Mid Devon

All Mid Devon households will soon be receiving a new collection calendar as the Council reorganises its recycling and rubbish collections rounds to become more efficient and reduce costs.

Up until now many people have had to remember two different days of the week for your brown bins/black sacks and your black recycling box. The good news is that from Monday 31 March there will be one regular day of the week for each collection. This could mean that your collection day(s) will change.

Waste & Transport Manager Simon Newcombe said: “We’ve done lots of preparation to...

Engineers on site are exploring a range of options, with the result that the schedule...

Proposals to save more than £1.2 million next year from the way the County Council manages waste and recycling have been put forward for consultation this week.

The potential savings are part of a wider plan to reduce the council’s budget by over £100m over the next three years to meet the latest Government spending targets. In addition to renegotiating and re-tendering existing waste management contracts , a series of measures are being proposed for 2014/15. These include:

A reduction in the opening hours at Household Waste Recycling Centres by one hour in the morning and...
