New roadside posters encouraging road users to slow down for horses and their riders are being displayed in parts of Devon.
Devon County Council is supporting The British Horse Society’s (BHS) “Dead Slow” road safety campaign, teaming up with the BHS , Horses & Road Safety Awareness (HRSA) and Vision Zero South West to promote the campaign in the county.
The aim is to educate motorists on how to approach and pass horses safely on the county’s roads, with the posters advising drivers to reduce their speed to a maximum of 10mph and leave at least two metres space....
The British Horse Society (BHS) has released figures highlighting a rise in incidents between horses and vehicles in Devon.
Between the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 years, incidents in Devon rose from 7 to 17, the highest figure in the South West. These incidents refer to collisions between vehicles and horses, as well as near-misses, that have resulted in death, injury or distress to riders or their horses.
There are 1.3 million regular riders in the UK, and in total 230 horses and 39 riders have been killed since 2010.

There was a sight to see around Exeter on Sunday for those doing some Christmas shopping as over a hundred motorbikers dressed as Santas, elves, reindeer and even a festive banana went through the city in convoy, taking part in a festive ride with a difference. The riders were on their way from their meeting place at Exeter Services to deliver piles of Christmas toys they were donating to youngsters with life-limiting illnesses at the Little Bridge Children’s Hospice South West in North Devon.

The Friends Life Tour of Britain has today (13 August) announced its biggest ever line-up of teams for next month’s race.
It has been confirmed that a record 120 riders from 20 squads will be competing for the Friends Life Yellow Jersey.

Exeter Eagles BMX club celebrated the completion of works to develop their track and facilities at a special evening event.
Funding for the new facilities has been provided by the Coastal Recycling Community Fund and has involved improvements to the track and the completion of a new toilet block and development of the club and catering room.
The track is now a centre of excellence with riders coming from all over the South West to compete and practice. The sport has become even more popular since the London Olympics and the Eagles Junior section is booming.
