Dr Anthony Kelly will explain that, unexpectedly, art prospered in Britain during the Second World War. Kenneth Clark’s ‘official’ war art was exhibited in the National Gallery with a classical ‘painting of the month’. His Recording Britain displayed tranquil landscapes, some in Devon. Large audiences also saw many independent exhibitions nationwide, providing inspiration in the dark days of war.
