BBC Children in Need has announced that it has awarded a new grant totalling £29,970 to a local project working with disadvantaged children and young people in Exeter.

The new funding award - made possible following BBC Children in Need’s 2019 Appeal in November - will support the delivery of vital services to young people in the area and means that the charity now has more than £219,000 invested locally.

Six recent building schemes based in Exeter have been shortlisted by a panel of expert judges in the 2020 Michelmores' Property Awards. The Awards, now in their 18th year, recognise the very best South West property and construction schemes, as well as the teams involved in them.

Research released today has officially named the University of Edinburgh as the best in the UK for student cyclists, beating bike-famous Cambridge - as students prepare to ditch public transport for social distancing in September.

Dog owners warned after pet caught in fox trap

Dog owners have been warned to be vigilant after a pet was lured into an illegal fox-trap at a popular walking spot in Exeter.

Fortunately the dog escaped unharmed and the incident has been reported to the police.

The incident happened in Ludwell Valley Park, close to the Wendover Way entrance. The owner of the dog said her pet was lured into the wire snare that had been placed in a hedgerow, by a number of opened tins of dog meat. She had to crawl through undergrowth to set him free after she heard her pet crying for help.

New test better predicts which babies will develop type 1 diabetes

A new approach to predicting which babies will develop type 1 diabetes moves a step closer to routine testing for newborns which could avoid life-threatening complications.

Scientists at seven international sites have followed 7,798 children at high risk of developing type 1 diabetes from birth, over nine years, in The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY) Study. The TEDDY Study is a large international study funded primarily by the US National Institutes of Health and U.S. Centers for Disease Control, as well as by the charity JDRF.
