The University of Exeter has been recognised for life-changing work to support disadvantaged young people and help them achieve their potential.

The University has been shortlisted for two categories - Innovation and University of the Year - in the UK Social Mobility Awards . The awards, which recognise and celebrate the achievements of businesses and organisations across the country in their work of advancing social mobility, will take place in October.

PEOPLE from south Devon wishing to make a real difference to the neighbourhoods where they live are being invited to take up a paid role in care within their own communities (July 2020).

Exeter closes the loop on throwaway plastic bags

Exeter has become the first council in the UK to turn plastic bags collected from the kerbside into litter bin sacks, it has been revealed.

Green-thinking Exeter City Council has partnered up with plastic recycling company Jayplas for the UK first.

The ‘closed loop’ project sees waste polythene bags collected from households across the city and trade customers, sent to Jayplas’s new film sorting plant in Smethick.

Once there it is sorted into polymer type and colour, before being turned into recycled granules by washing and compounding the materials.

Loud cheers went up around the Devon Air Ambulance airbase at Exeter airport last Thursday, as their new Airbus H145 helicopter flew down the runway and settled onto the helipad – it was the first time this new generation aircraft had landed in Devon.

The new helicopter arrived at Exeter as part of a training flight from the Airbus Helicopters UK facility in Oxfordshire, where the aircraft is currently based. Unwanted tools to help change lives in Africa

Following the launch of RGB Building Supplies’ Tools for Africa appeal in January, the builders merchant is thanking trades and the community local to Exeter for helping to donate 15 bulk bags full of preloved tools which have been passed to Devon-based charity Amigos.

Amigos works closely with another UK charity called Work Aid, which will now refurbish the donated items before sending them to Africa. The tools will be used by young people so they can learn construction skills and help lift themselves and their families out of poverty.
