Devon's winter teams prepared

Devon County Council’s winter service teams are prepared and ready if they are called into action over the Christmas holidays and throughout the rest of the winter season.

The authority has upgraded six gritters to replace older vehicles in its winter fleet of 37 frontline gritters.

So far this winter, around 3,000 tonnes of salt have been used on Devon’s roads. The Council starts the winter season with around 24,000 tonnes of salt in its depots.

Food waste report endorsed by Cabinet

An action plan to help reduce the amount of food waste in Devon was endorsed by Devon County Council's ruling Cabinet.

It follows a Food Waste Spotlight Review being commissioned by Devon County Council’s Corporate, Infrastructure and Regulatory Services Scrutiny Commitee earlier this year.

Representatives from food charities, councils and anaerobic digestion plants attended the review to discuss why food is wasted, how to reduce it and ways to improve its collection.

A new award ceremony celebrating innovation and excellence in research across Cornwall, Devon & Somerset is now open for nominations.

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), Clinical Research Network, South West Peninsula has launched its new Research Awards. This is an opportunity to recognise exceptional achievements and dedication to research delivery in the region.

Drivers warned to take care in wet weather this weekend

Devon County Council is asking road users to travel with care over the next few days and into the weekend as heavy rain is forecast and flooding likely in several areas.

Currently highways teams are working to clear flooding in several places including at the Countess Wear Roundabout in Exeter.

A Yellow Weather Warning is in place until tomorrow and another is in place on Saturday night and into Sunday morning.

Heavy rain is forecast, especially over high ground with many places within the warning area seeing 10-15 mm of rain.

Childline prepares to support children during their darkest hours at Christmas

Childline volunteers are preparing to work day and night over the festive period to help young people from the South West who are struggling to cope with serious mental health problems.

In 2018/19 the NSPCC service delivered 7,157 counselling sessions across the 12-day period over Christmas and New Year – with almost 900 of those sessions happening between midnight and 7am.

More than half of those seeking support through the night across the festive period were struggling with mental health issues, self-harm and in the worst cases, suicidal thoughts and feelings.

The Safer Devon Partnership has today launched a campaign featuring a hard-hitting film, warning people of the threat of radicalisation.

Through its campaign the Partnership, which provides leadership for community safety work carried out across the county, is seeking to raise awareness about the risks of radicalisation, and in particular the role the internet (through social media, online gaming etc) often plays in that process.

Hendy Group’s heavy truck division, which includes a major centre in Exeter, is celebrating success in Europe after becoming the first UK IVECO dealer to be included in the Top 20 leading service providers in 2019
