People in Devon are being invited to step out with the Ramblers for their Walk About festival this summer and uncover the hidden gems on their doorstep. The nationwide festival, supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, takes place from 26 May to 3 June with hundreds of free group walks on offer across the Britain. This year, many of the festival walks highlight hidden gems that can be found along the way – from unexpected views and peaceful picnic spots to atmospheric ancient ruins – that can often only be spotted when you head out on foot.

Police are appealing for information after an elderly woman’s home was burgled on Monday 7 May 2018.
The incident happened at a property on Grendon Road in Exeter between 11.30am and 3.30pm.
During the burglary, a sentimental 18ct gold ring was stolen that had recently been valued at £1600 [photograph attached]. The ring is a pale blue sapphire ring which is set in a four claw, double gallery setting and mounted on a knife edge shank. The emerald cut, pale blue sapphire measures (L) 11.5mm x (W) 8mm x (D) 6.55mm. Total weight was 6.6 grams. The ring size is N ½.
The British Horse Society (BHS) has released figures highlighting a rise in incidents between horses and vehicles in Devon.
Between the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 years, incidents in Devon rose from 7 to 17, the highest figure in the South West. These incidents refer to collisions between vehicles and horses, as well as near-misses, that have resulted in death, injury or distress to riders or their horses.
There are 1.3 million regular riders in the UK, and in total 230 horses and 39 riders have been killed since 2010.

South West Water has been ordered to pay £71,800 in fines and costs for failing to correct faults at sewage treatments works in two of Devon’s most popular coastal towns. The prosecution was brought by the Environment Agency.
Problems at the company’s sewage treatment works in Salcombe and Dartmouth culminated in the sites breaching their environmental permits. Both sites suffer from saline (sea) water infiltration, however the main issue was failure to manage and maintain processes and infrastructure at the two sites between 2015 and 2016.
