Record £83.6 million Government funding for roads

Devon County Council has welcomed a record £83.6 million “early Christmas present” from the Government for road repairs. The funding of £83,640,000 for Devon is the largest share of a record £1.6 billion investment announced by the Government today (Friday 20 December) to fill potholes and repair roads. Green-fingered youngsters help plant micro-forest in school grounds

Children and teachers from a primary school in Exeter have done their bit for the environment by planting a 400-tree micro-forest in their school grounds.

The youngsters from Monkerton Community Primary School were joined by local councillors from Exeter City Council and Devon County Council for the event, which was organised by Community Interest Company SocieTree.

SocieTree was launched in 2023 and aims to highlight the benefits that micro forests bring. It has been working closely with schools across Devon.

National Tree Week is being celebrated in Devon this week (until Sunday 1 Dec) with an announcement that Emergency Tree Funding granted by the Woodland Trust has been extended to help Devon County Council's Free Tree Scheme this winter. Iron Bridge in Exeter to be refurbished

The 190-year-old Iron Bridge in Exeter will be closed for essential maintenance at the start of next year.

The Grade II listed structure needs to undergo structural repairs, drainage improvements, replacement of expansion joints, waterproofing of the bridge deck, resurfacing and upgrades to signs and lighting.

Work is due to start on Monday 13 January 2025, and is expected to take around five months to complete.

Winners of children's recycle and reuse short story competition praised

The winners of a children’s short story competition, which focused on the themes of waste and recycling, were presented with their prizes last weekend (September 21) at Exeter Library.

The competition was held earlier this year and was organised by Devon County Council’s Waste Education Team.

The team works with schools across the county to raise awareness about the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling through events such as this competition, school trips and workshops.

Devon County Council’s network of public electric vehicle chargers have electrified over one million miles of road travel in under two years since installation.

The chargers, installed in partnership with ScottishPower, aim to help tackle the challenges caused by Devon’s rural and disperse landscape. More families in Devon will be able to access help and support following the launch of a dedicated Family Hub Advice Line and website , run by the charity Action for Children on behalf of Devon County Council.

New leader and deputy at County Hall

Devon County Council's deputy leader is set to become the new leader of the authority.

James McInnes has been chosen by the ruling Conservative group to replace John Hart. Long-standing Cabinet member Andrea Davis will become deputy leader.

The changes are set to be ratified at the council's annual meeting on Thursday 23 May.

Mr Hart is being nominated to become chairman of the council at the same meeting.
