Stagecoach update: shuttle service to Topsham

Stagecoach have announced: "We are running a shuttle service from Exeter Bus Station to Topsham with departures from the bus station at approx. 15.30, 16.30 and 17.30.

"The shuttle is to provide a direct link to Topsham in the absence of the 57 being able to serve the village and until the T service resumes operation from from the High Street at 1831."

Environment Agency warns of further flooding

Heavy rain today (Thursday 22nd November) could lead to further flooding across the south west of England this afternoon and evening, the Environment Agency has warned.

Run-off from already wet fields and other areas could lead to further river and surface water flooding, and strong winds could worsen surface water flooding, as wind-blown leaves and debris block drains.

There are currently 33 flood warnings and 56 flood alerts in force.

Exeter City Centre Christmas Lights switch-on postponed

Exeter City Council and Princesshay have announced that they are having to postpone the Exeter Christmas Lights Switch On event scheduled for this evening, due to the exceptional weather circumstances and the safety of spectators and participants.

The event has been rescheduled for tomorrow, Friday 23rd November from 4.30pm in Princesshay Square. Live entertainment will feature on stage from 4.30pm, with the lights being switched on collectively by the Lympstone Military Wives Choir and Michael Caines at 6.15pm. Temporary dams to breached canal are holding up

Temporary dams stemming the escape of water from the breached Grand Western Canal have been successful, after engineers worked overnight to regain control.

Approximately two miles of the canal drained through a breach in its embankment late yesterday afternoon, caused, it's suspected, by excessive rain fall.

The breach at Halberton near Tiverton is where the canal's embankment rises nearly 60 feet from surrounding fields.

Exeter Guildhall Shopping Centre festivities kick off tonight

The Christmas fun starts today for Exeter's Guildhall (22nd November) with an afternoon and evening of entertainment for the Christmas lights switch-on, which is still scheduled to go ahead this evening despite the weather conditions.

Further rain causes sleepless nights for some Devon residents

Engineers worked overnight to try to stabilise the Grand Western Canal, which breached its banks after heavy rain in Halberton, near Tiverton.

20 families were evacuated after water breached the 200-year-old canal. Winds of up to 70mph are expected to affect Devon and Cornwall, with torrential rain and flooding predicted.

Devon and Cornwall Police said they closed the road through Halberton, while work to stabilise the canal was being carried out.

Rail service update affecting Exeter St Davids

Network Rail are currently reporting severe disruptions to rail services, saying it could be days before services are back to normal again.

First Great Western are reporting that their London Paddington to Plymouth service is disrupted between London Paddington and Plymouth, between Bristol Temple Meads and Plymouth and between Westbury and Plymouth due to flooding at Tiverton Parkway. Further disruptions to Stagecoach services due to flooding

Currently Stagecoach is reporting disruptions on the following services:

Service 57 Cannot currently serve Topsham therefore it is diverting via Clyst st Mary to Sandy Gate Roundabout and onto the by-pass to Countess Wear Roundabout and then into Exeter. Passengers wishing to travel to Topsham will need to transfer onto Service T at Countess Wear roundabout.

Service 1 Going direct from Pinhoe to Cullompton along the M5, then can serve Willand, Halberton & Uffculme but cannot currently serve either Bradninch or Sampford Peverall
