Graduates not equipped with business skills new study with SW law firms shows

A survey with leading South West law firms has identified five factors which are holding law graduates back from becoming high achievers.

The survey also showed that undergraduate law degrees are not effectively teaching the business skills that students need for a successful career in law.

The survey with ten of the leading law firms in the South West, including Michelmores, Womble Bond Dickinson and Browne Jacobson, was conducted by Truro-based Kies Consulting.

Virtual Dartmoor Folk Festival includes traditional competitions

DESPITE the postponement of the full 2020 Dartmoor Folk Festival this August, the festival's traditional competitions and some fun activities will still be going ahead on-line.

The festival was due to take place at South Zeal near Okehampton on August 6, 7 and 8.

Instead, on Saturday, August 8, the traditional Dartmoor Step Dance and Broom Dancing competitions will take place via zoom meetings.

Exeter student creates 40 pieces of artwork for the 40 million people trafficked into modern slavery

Megan Buchanan-Smith, a student at the University of Exeter, learned about the transatlantic slave trade during her History degree. She was shocked to realise that there are now more people in slavery than ever before. Megan decided to use her passion for art to raise money for anti-slavery organisation, International Justice Mission.

This Thursday 30th July is World Day Against Trafficking in Persons – a day to raise awareness of human trafficking and increase action to end it.

Parents urged not to use facemask on their baby

Parents and guardians of babies under 12 months are advised not to cover their mouths with facemasks as it could cause breathing difficulties. While there have been no reports of ‘baby masks’ being sold in Devon, Torbay or Somerset, parents and guardians are urged not to buy them as they could harm their baby’s health.

The advice comes from Devon, Somerset and Torbay Trading Standards Service.

Exeter closes the loop on throwaway plastic bags

Exeter has become the first council in the UK to turn plastic bags collected from the kerbside into litter bin sacks, it has been revealed.

Green-thinking Exeter City Council has partnered up with plastic recycling company Jayplas for the UK first.

The ‘closed loop’ project sees waste polythene bags collected from households across the city and trade customers, sent to Jayplas’s new film sorting plant in Smethick.

Once there it is sorted into polymer type and colour, before being turned into recycled granules by washing and compounding the materials.

Weekend car use nearing pre-lockdown levels

Weekend car use is returning to pre-lockdown levels, according to figures released this week by the Department for Transport (DfT). However, weekday car trips are still well below normal.

While weekday car use remained on a par with weekend use through much of the lockdown, weekend car trips have risen more sharply than weekday journeys over the last four weeks.

The weekend of 11 and 12 July was 7% below pre-lockdown levels, whereas the average daily weekday figure was down 19% last week, 13-17 July, and by 22% for the week before that, 6-10 July.
