A rare pair of RSPB red-listed pied flycatchers have been spotted by thrilled bird watchers making their home in specially made bird boxes. The birds have been nesting near the bird hide at the National Trust’s Lydford Gorge on Dartmoor. Migrating from sub-Saharan Africa, usually in the Congo basin, the pied flycatchers move to the coast of West Africa in the spring, before returning to the UK. Staff and volunteers at Lydford Gorge are organising a Winter Fayre on Sunday 30 November between 11am and 3pm, to encourage shoppers to buy local produce and gifts for the forthcoming Christmas season.
Sarah Hortop, Retail Manager at Lydford Gorge, says: "It’s very exciting – I have worked at Lydford Gorge for 27 years and this is the first time we have held an event like this. We hope it will encourage everyone to not only buy locally-grown seasonal produce that will add real quality to their Christmas, but also get out and about in the beautiful winter countryside."
Local rescue charities and branches of emergency services, National Trust and Dartmoor National Park Authority are holding their third safety on Dartmoor day at Lydford Gorge near Tavistock on Sunday 22 June between 10am and 5pm.
On the day, there will be the opportunity to look round fire engines, police cars and ambulances plus meet the local fire fighters, police officers, air ambulance crew and rescue dogs.
