Racing at Exeter on New Year’s Day is a long-established Devon tradition. It’s when sore heads from the previous nights celebrations are banished and the excitement of horses and jockeys galloping around the track are enjoyed.

This year, early birds can enjoy a 25 per cent discount off the price of Grandstand and Paddock tickets if they book by Christmas Eve (quote NYD2014) and with children aged 17 and under gaining free entry, it’s one of the county’s top destinations to continue the New Year celebrations.

General manager Tim Darby said: “The atmosphere at Exeter on New Year’s Day is always fantastic with people wanting to celebrate the first day of the New Year in the fresh air against the backdrop of some thrilling racing. Nothing beats the experience of a day at the races.”

It is not uncommon for potentially great horses to start their careers at Exeter, before gaining a real name for themselves and two of the most famous horses in racing history, Desert Orchid and Best Mate, won their first steeplechases at Exeter in 1985 and 2000 respectively. Other great horses to race at Exeter include Denman and Kauto Star.

The racecourse is labeled by many as one of the top  tracks in the country, providing top quality racing and featuring some of the biggest names in racing.

January 1 will be no exception and Haldon Hill looks set to once again play its part in traditional New Year’s Day celebrations.
