An evening with moths and bats
In celebration of National Moth Night, The Trill Trust and Butterfly Conservation are inviting locals to spend the evening of 11th September at Trill Farm, meeting some of the most secretive night time inhabitants, the moths and bats.
There are around 2500 species of moth in the UK and they are not the butterfly's drab cousin that some people take them for, they are in fact fascinating and beautiful creatures. Bats are the moths nemesis, using their echolocation to catch them for food, but some moths have developed adaptations to try to outwit the bats in an ever evolving arms race between the two groups of animals.
On the evening of the 11th September, a moth trap will be set up to lure in these insects and see what species can be found. After which there will be a hosted bat walk, to listen out for their calls as they hunt the moths and other insects that abound on the farm.
The moth trap will be running late in to the night so on Saturday morning guests are invited to return to Trill Farm to lift the lid to unveil what has been caught overnight, and therefore discover the weird and wonderful world of the moth.
An Evening With Moths & Bats takes place on 11th September 8pm - 10.30pm & 12th September 9.30am - 11.30am. Booking is essential as places are limited.
