Mingle Music presents The Thursday Thingamajig with Trifles & Mudskippers
Mudskippers are an acoustic trio from Exeter consisting of cello, clarinet and acoustic guitar. Their beautifully rich songs are influenced by modern English folk legends and effectively blend a range of different styles and genres, including indie, latin, progressive rock and world music. Mudskippers play their own compositions with the occasional cover by the likes of Roy Harper & Nick Drake.
Mudskippers originally formed in 1991 and split in 1994. A chance meeting between Bully (acoustic guitar, vocals) and Jo Hooper (cello) in 2010 led to a rekindling of their musical partnership, with an agreement to try out a set of entirely new songs. Following a spell gigging as a quartet with guitarist Alan Rice and percussionist Richie Cooke, the band reinvented itself in 2012 as a trio with clarinet and sax player Corinne Bailey. Since then, appearances at Column Acoustic in Plymouth, Acoustica Festival in Exeter and various other events have seen them building a reputation as one of the South West's Folk acts to watch.

Now on their third name change, The Trifles (ex- The Triffles, Quilting! and From The Triffles) are a post-punk, quirk pop duo with a refreshing line in acerbic, witty original tunes, backed up by an eclectic mix of covers from The Dickies to Monty Python, The Lemonheads to Tom Lehrer. The pair artfully thrash away on 6- and 12-string guitars, ukeleles and anything else that comes to hand in a tightly harmonic, punchy performance. New tracks include one about beer (The Beer Song) and another about Fiona Bruce (“Fiona Bruce, Fiona Bruce, always shakes her head when she's reading the news. What's she so disapproving about? Fiona Bruce.”).
