Man seriously injured in South Devon crash

Police are appealing for witnesses to a collision in which a man was seriously injured near Teignmouth.

Officers were called to the scene shortly before 1am on Tuesday 19 April following reports of a single vehicle collision on the A381 Newton Road near Bishopsteignton.

A silver Suzuki Ignis collided with a stone wall near the Metro Motors car sales garage and the vehicle rolled causing significant damage to the car.

The 39-year-old male driver of the car, who was the only occupant, was located by a passing member of the public trapped within the vehicle.

He was freed from the car by the fire servie and initially taken by ambulance to Torbay Hospital before being transferred to Derriford Hospital, in Plymouth.

The driver, who is from the Birmingham area, suffered potentially life threatening injuries and his condition is described as critical but stable.

The A381 to Teignmouth was closed to enable the Serious Collisions Investigation Unit to carry out an investigation of the scene. The road was reopened at around 9am.

Officers from the Serious Collisions Investigation Unit are appealing for anyone who witnessed to the incident or saw the silver Suzuki on the A381 prior to the collision to contact police.
