Unsung Exeter hero shortlisted for national Foyer award

Local man Alan Sharp, who works as a Senior Project Worker at the Exeter Foyer in Commercial Road, has been shortlisted for the Unsung Hero Award at the Inaugural Foyer Awards 2017 which recognise the achievements and dedication of Foyer staff across the country.

Exeter Foyer, which is operated by social and supported housing provider Stonewater, provides accommodation, training and assistance to local vulnerable young people, aged 16 – 25, with the aim of helping them to eventually live independently in the community.

Alan was nominated for the award by his work colleagues and Foyer Manager, Andy Hood.

“Alan regularly goes far beyond the call of duty, often staying late to ensure the welfare and continued support of residents,” says Exeter Foyer Manager Andy. “He doesn't shout about all the work he does or draw attention to the amount of extra time and work he puts into the Foyer. Alan truly deserves to be shortlisted for this award and we wish him the best of luck.”

Alan, who has worked in a variety of roles at Exeter Foyer for the past 10 years, and was its first student placement, has helped to lay the foundations for many more successful health and social care student placements. After qualifying as an occupational therapist, he chose to return to the Foyer to apply his training, signposting young people towards positive personal development.

“I was really surprised when I found out that I had been nominated for an award as my colleagues had kept it a secret from me,” explains Alan. “It’s really nice to be recognised and it’s great that these awards are helping to raise public awareness of the important work that Foyers do to help and support vulnerable young people in the community.”

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at the end of this month.
