Vote for your recycling hero

Communities across Devon are being called on to vote for this year’s recycling heroes.

The fourth Recycle Devon Thank You Awards is being held next month, and this year residents can vote online.

Vote for your favourite shortlisted candidate at: http://www.recycledevon.org/have-your-vote up until 8 February.

This year there have been 61 nominations in categories Your Recycling Hero, School Recycling Hero, Community Group recycling hero, Collection Crew/Operative,  Recycling Centre Operative staff and Small Business Champion.

These entries have been shortlisted and now residents are being invited to have the final say.

All the shortlisted candidates have been invited to attend an award ceremony at County Hall on 12 February in the Coaver Club, hosted by Matt and Caroline from Heart Radio’s breakfast show.

The awards are organised by the Recycle Devon team, and were first launched to recognise those people who do that bit extra to help ensure Devon remains clean and green.

Recycle Devon is a partnership of 10 councils including Devon County Council, eight district authorities and one unitary authority.

At the awards ceremony, winners and runners up will receive special handmade Recycle Devon awards,  upcycled from glass bottles supplied by Devon company, Glass ReForm based in Barnstaple. 

The Recycle Devon People’s Choice hero will receive a prize of a champagne board made from a flattened champagne bottle and a certificate.

There will also be a scrumptious cream tea kindly sponsored by Waitrose who have supported the awards since their inception four  years ago.

Chairman of Devon Authorities Waste Reduction and Recycling Committee  (DAWRCC) Councillor Rodney Cann said: “At last count 55.4 per cent of the total rubbish collected or taken to the county’s numerous recycling centres that could otherwise have ended up in landfill, was recycled.

“This is tremendous and marks Devon as one of the top recycling counties in England.
“Recycle Devon wants to recognise those who have gone beyond the call of duty or perhaps even come up with new and innovative ways to reduce waste or reuse old items and the awards ceremony will be a thank you to them for the good work that they do.”
