The Bard meets Brexit!
Untold Theatre and Yellowbelly Theatre are producing a version of ‘The Tempest’, touring theatres and community venues in the UK this Autumn.
This radical revamp of Shakespeare’s classic will combine News Footage, digital projections and live action. The show imagines the world during the year 2020: exploring the European Migration Crisis and asking ‘What happens next?’. Collections will be taken at each performance for the charity MSF (Doctors without Borders). MSF provide emergency medical aid to people affected by conflict.
As part of the tour, The Tempest will perform at the Cygnet Theatre (Exeter) on Friday 30th September 2016. This is a return to Exeter, and to the Cygnet, for Untold Theatre - who sold out their performance of 'Beyond Expectations' last year. The Scotsman described their work: "striking costumes and innovative projections".
Yellowbelly Theatre and Untold Theatre specialise is touring work that is contemporary, accessible and engages with current issues. “We want this production to get behind the dizzying statistics offered by the media, and show the real human elements of the problem,” say Untold Theatre.
Both companies hope that this production will turn ideas about Shakespeare upside down. “The show should be full of recognisable elements from the real world – Shakespeare needs to remain relevant,” say the producers. “The show takes shots at wealth, politics and the ruling elite – but ultimately, it’s about finding a place to call ‘home’.”
