Festival will feature some of the best contemporary craft in the country
A small market town on the edge of Dartmoor will become the focus for some of the best contemporary craft in the country this June.
The Contemporary Craft Festival at Bovey Tracey is one of the key events in the national crafts calendar. Almost 200 makers from all over Britain will be demonstrating, selling and talking about their work.
Visitors to the event will be able to meet the makers and buy their work – a range of jewellery, ceramics, textiles, furniture, prints and other contemporary crafts.
The Craft Festival also features demonstrations, talks, exhibitions and activities including:
- Demonstrations of glass blowing, stone carving, textile printing, weaving and a range of other skills.
- The opportunity for visitors to try their hand at jewellery, printmaking and a range of other crafts as part of a series of free workshops run by Devon Adult Community Learning.
- A Talk Tipi will house a programme of talks exploring new technology & craft, craft & social change, conservation & preserving our heritage, the importance of handmade, and a range of other topics. Speakers include Alice Taylor – CEO of Makie Lab, RepRap 3D Printing engineer Richard Horne, Paul Dieppe, Professor of Health and Wellbeing at Exeter University and Sarah Corbett – founder of the Craftivist Collective. Sarah Corbett will also be running a Craftivism workshop.
- The Children’s Craft Tent will follow the theme of the Contemporary Landscape. Free activities will include mosaic, knitting, printing, weaving and animation. Children’s Craft Tent is run in association with and the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, The Devon Guild of Craftsmen’s ‘’Big Hand, Little Hand, The Crafts Council Craft Club, Devon Weavers Workshop and Exeter Phoenix.
- One Year On showcases the work of emerging makers in their first year of practice and aims to encourage and promote creative talent. Aim Higher
- Universities and colleges in the South West offering higher and further education opportunities in the applied arts will be represented at Aim Higher.
- The Making and Materials Avenue will feature craft suppliers, guilds & associations, craft magazines, museums and other craft related organizations.
- The Devon Guild of Craftsmen Marquee will show the work of the Guild, one of the country’s most acclaimed exhibition and retail spaces for contemporary craft. The Guild is based in Bovey Tracey and represents the work of members all the south west of England.
The Contemporary Craft Fair takes place at Marsh Mill Park, Bovey Tracey, Devon TQ13 9AL from 6- 8 June 2014.
Opening hours: 10am to 5pm.
Tickets: £8 for a day ticket, £15 for a weekend super saver and £22 for a family ticket. Concessions are available, children under 14 free.
