This summer the croquet lawn at Castle Drogo will be the backdrop for some very special outdoor theatre and music.

‘Cider with Rosie’ from the novel by Laurie Lee will be performed by the Plough Community Theatre on Saturday 27 June, 7-9pm. Set during the period that Castle Drogo was being built, at the end of the First World War, ‘Cider with Rosie’ recounts Laurie Lee’s powerful childhood memories of life in a rural village which had seen few changes in a thousand years.

From being left alone in a field at the age of three, to leaving the family home as an adult, we share Laurie Lee’s experience of family life, dubious schooling, trips to the seaside, eccentric locals, church teas, friendship, first love and big goats!

This lively adaptation by Cornwall’s Nick Darke has provided ample opportunity for creative invention by local actors from Plough Community Theatre and this action-packed drama full of music, movement and original songs is ideal for all the family.

Tickets are available from the Plough box office on 01805 624624. Prices: £10 (£8 Conc,  £7 Plough Supporters + families with children under 18yrs).

On Sunday 12 July, 6.30-9pm the croquet lawn will be the setting for Jazz @ Drogo.

Popular local musicians The City Steam Jazz Band will be performing in aid of Cancer Research UK. Tickets are available in advance from the shop at Castle Drogo, or email jazzatdrogo@gmail.com or telephone 01647 432068.

Then, on Friday 14 August, 5-8pm, Castle Drogo will be the venue for a very special performance of David Walliams’s book ‘Mr Stink’ by Heartbreak productions. This is an outdoor show packed with fun, humour and a heart-warming message, perfect for a summer family outing.

Tickets are available from the Plough box office on 01805 624624. Prices:  £13 (£11 Conc, £9 Plough Supporters + families with children under 18yrs)

Rebecca Glover, Castle Drogo’s Visitor Experience Manager, says: “The beautiful Castle Drogo gardens are the perfect venue for these exciting performances. Bring a picnic, a rug and, hopefully, the sunshine  - but we’ll have lots of fun whatever the weather. You can even pre-order a picnic from the Castle Drogo café by ringing 01647 434143, which will then be ready for you to collect on the night.”
