Three unlikely friends take control of their office and learn there is nothing they can’t do, even in a man’s world!
Clock off work and head on down to The Barnfield Theatre for a Dolly good time as Exeter Little Theatre Company (ELTC) present ‘9 to 5 The Musical’.
Based on the 1980 hit movie, this vibrant and energetic musical follows co-workers Violet, Judy and Doralee in a hilarious story about friendship, with a good ole dose of revenge, as they look to get even with their sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot of a boss.
When Violet is passed up for promotion by her tyrannical boss Franklin Hart Jr because she is a woman, she and country gal Doralee - the object of Hart’s unwanted advances - and new girl Judy, share their fantasies of giving their boss the boot!
In a hilarious sequence of events, they end up kidnapping him and taking over the company with the aim to make changes to show who’s the boss, once and for all.
Featuring a Tony award nominated score by Dolly Parton, you will want to set your alarm to make sure you don’t miss out on this outrageous and poignant show.
Isobel Court, director/ choreographer, said: “we’re having an absolute ball at rehearsals. It’s a lot of hard work as the numbers are high octane and jam packed with energetic dance and the music has some very tricky harmonies to learn, but we are blessed with an incredibly talented cast who are all putting in the work, both at rehearsals and with practicing at home.
I remember watching the 1980 movie as a child - and many times since - and falling in love with all three endearing lead characters and the madcap way they dealt with their bigoted boss!
Serious issues are raised within the story but they are cleverly broached with humour. Equal pay and sexual harassment, are still strikingly relevant issues, even 40 years on from the the movie’s release!
The hilarious and poignant story and incredible musical score make it a must see. Choosing ‘9 to 5 The Musical’ was a no brainer for me - especially as it is also currently playing at the Savoy in London!

9 to 5 explodes onto the stage of The Barnfield Theatre from Thursday 11th until Saturday 20th July. All evening performances begin at 7.30pm in the main auditorium. There will be a signed performance on Friday 19th July.
Tickets are on sale now from the Barnfield Theatre at £17.50 for adults, £14.50 for children aged16 and under. All tickets for Thurs 11th and the matinee on Sat 13th are £14.50.
