Go 'Into the woods' at the Barnfield Theatre
The company that brought you the brilliant sell-out ‘West Side Story’ return with Into the woods at The Barnfield Theatre this June.
A Sondheim classic, Exeter University Footlights’ production aims to prove that “No-One is Alone” when venturing into the woods.
Into the woods combines the well- loved fairy tales of Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk and Little Red Riding Hood. These compelling stories are threaded together with Lapine’s original story of the Baker and his Wife, who are cursed by the Wicked Witch, and left unable to have children. The Baker and his Wife endeavour to lift their family curse by journeying into the woods, where they encounter familiar classic fairy tale characters. As their stories collide, they realise that fairy tales are not so simple after all and that they must learn the responsibility that comes with getting what you want.
Following these character’s triumphs and catastrophes, the ensemble will be sure to do the complexity of Sondheim’s music justice; show casing their vocal talents to the show’s Tony Award winning Best Score, including well-known numbers “Agony”, “Happy ever after” and “Giants in the Sky”.
Into the woods is one of many Sondheim shows which thrive on complex lyricism and musical motifs. Directed by Jordan Murphy and Aaron McCrossan, Jordan comments on the challenges of putting on a large-scale production on a low budget. He said: “The restrictions of such a small budget won’t affect the quality of the production. The production team and creative team are working tirelessly to get this production on its feet. As a society we aim for our shows to be to a professional standard, this professionalism was evident in West Side Story and we hope it will be with Into The Woods too."
With the biggest cast Footlights' has ever had for a summer production, Into the Woods is looking to be another victory for Footlights.
