It’s fair to say that bingo has a fair few stereotypes attached it. Mention the game and immediately we think of a night out with our granny.

However, those days are long gone as Mecca Bingo is well and truly part of the ‘in’ crowd of Devon thanks to their hip hall in the heart of Exeter.

The North Street bingo hall is really capitalising on the bingo revolution and it’s welcoming more young adults through the door than ever before.

Online bingo has played a big part in that, with thousands upon thousands playing Mecca Bingo online every day, and they’re now making their way into the real-life halls too.

It’s fast-paced, seriously fun and like playing online, there’s thousands of pounds up for grabs too.

The Exeter branch, housed in a former grand cinema offers up to £50,000 in winnings in each session when playing the National Game, while Sunday’s are proving incredibly popular with £1,000 wins for a full house.

The next step is keeping the younger generation coming through the doors. Student nights are regularly hosted by Mecca, with upwards of 900 students visiting for a night out and to be in with a chance of winning.

As more young people step away from alcohol, it’s an intelligent move to offer a different form of entertainment.

As long as bingo continues to be a huge success online too, new audiences will continue to spill into the brick-and-mortar versions, creating a bustling scene.

Mecca is at the very heart of that currently. They’ve thrived in welcoming new audiences, offering new variations and understanding what the new generation of player wants, while also not losing any of their traditions.

You still won’t find bingo callers calling “two fat ladies” or “legs 11”, but rather quick calling and a simplicity that allows both new and experienced players to understand.

2020 will undoubtedly be another big year for bingo, and if you’re looking for a new pastime, it could well be the one for you.

Exeter’s Mecca is really putting a cool new bingo on the map in Devon, and over the next 12 months, as revenue increases online and via smartphone gameplay, we can likely expect new types of game to arrive offline.

Big cities are also enjoying new pop up games taking over music venues, creating a livelier atmosphere and a more wacky, introductory flavour to bingo.

The crest of a bingo wave is being ridden, and it shows no sign of slowing down. Bingo is back and it’s pushing out every stereotype that steps into its path.
