Cullompton PE teacher to run London Marathon for Get Kids Going
A PE teacher and former semi-professional footballer from Cullompton is running the Virgin Money London Marathon to raise money for Get Kids Going! – a charity which helps disabled children achieve their sporting dreams.
Ian Patchett, 30, has played football for the likes of Tiverton Town, Willand Rovers, Yeovil Town, Exmouth Town and Barnstaple Town.
In the last year he has switched his attention to running, competing in several 5k and 10k events and recording top-20 finishes in his only two half marathons.
Having enjoyed success in the Great West Run and the Bideford Half Marathon, Ian is now preparing to compete over 26 miles for the first time when he heads to London on Sunday 26 April.
Ian, who represents South West Road Runners, said he had been training hard over the last six months.
He said: “I am hoping to run the marathon in three hours but I will simply be happy to get round knowing I have been able to raise some money and make a little difference.”
Get Kids Going! supports disabled young athletes and helps to provide manual wheelchairs for children to use every day – at home, at school and to enable them to play with their friends.
“This is a really good charity which believes that all disabled children and young people should receive the right equipment to get them going,” said Ian.
“As a PE teacher this is something that is very relevant to me, and I am happy at the prospect of really making a difference to a child's lifestyle and the sporting opportunities available to them.”
Ian, who works at Newton Abbot College, has so far raised more than £500 towards his target of £2,000.
