Golfers called to tee off for tenth charity tournament
Organisers of one of Devon’s premier golf tournaments will be celebrating its tenth anniversary in style this summer, hoping to raise more than £100k for local charity Hospiscare.
Teams of golf enthusiasts are being called to putt their best swing forward at the Hospiscare Golf Day, taking place at the Exeter Golf and Country Club on July 10.
Spaces are available for 50 teams of four to sign up for the amateur competition and be in with a chance of taking home the coveted Marnie Burgoyne Memorial Trophy.
Since its launch in 2004, the golf event has seen more than 2000 people take part helping to raise a whopping £92k for Hospiscare.
To celebrate a decade of this popular event, the golf day committee have pulled out all the stops to make the 2014 tournament bigger and better than ever before, with the hopes of seeing the total amount raised over the years pass the £100k mark.
Committee Chairman Norma Foster said: “The tournament has grown and grown in the last ten years and 220 people played last year.
“The tournament is a fun event but it is serious golf. It’s for a brilliant cause and it’s a cause that is much-needed in the community.
“A lot of people who have supported the event in past have personal reasons for doing so – I do it because my husband died of cancer. This year my two boys are playing with me in the tournament.”
A two course carvery will be served following the teams’ time on the 18-hole course. Although time spent choosing the right club to play the tenth hole could double, as players stand to scoop more than just an ego boost by achieving an elusive hole-in-one.
Norma said: “It was my aim this year to have a hole-in-one prize on the tenth hole to celebrate our tenth year. If anyone should get a hole-in-one on that hole they will win a brand new car.”
Prizes valued at £2.5k will also be up for grabs at the event with at least ten team prizes, including several rounds of golf, available.
Keen golfer Mike Bamforth, from Acorus Rural Property Services, has entered a team in the Hospiscare Golf Day since the event began.
In 2013 team Acorus were elated to be able to take home the much-loved tournaments’ top prize.
Mike said: “Acorus Rural Property Services have supported this excellent event and important charity for many years now. We always turn up to play and have fun, so to finally win the tournament was a bonus.
“This is always a great event and to take home the trophy instead of a box of chocolates from the prize draw was a perfect bonus. We will be back for the tenth anniversary tournament on July 10.”
