Financial support is available through the NHS for those who need full-time care, says campaigner Roger Burgess.

NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) is funded solely by the NHS for people who have a primary health need.

It covers 100% of their care fees including accommodation and food where appropriate for people who require full-time care primarily for health reasons, and it is available in any setting whether you are in a care home, in your own home, in a hospice or anywhere else.

This is one of the NHSs best kept secrets; it is sometimes referred to as the “Secret Fund”.

The one vexed question that the NHS wants to avoid is who pays when someone has a “Primary Health Need”?  It is of course the NHS but very few people are actually aware of the term “NHS Continuing Healthcare” (CHC), or how to go about making an application.

The NHS has a duty to promote Continuing Healthcare at key locations, for example you would perhaps expect to see this information freely available in your Surgery waiting rooms, Hospitals, Health Centre, Care and  Nursing Homes, etc, but you could be mistaken, because strangely enough the information is unlikely to be there.

If you know of anyone who is currently receiving full-time care for Primary Health reasons then it is the responsibility of the NHS to meet all of those costs.

They may already be paying unnecessarily or having to sell property to fund their care, they may even be owed many thousands of pounds in back dated payments by the NHS, however refunds will now only apply to applications made after the 31st March 2013.
