Michael Caines "angry and saddened" about Clarence fire
Celebrity chef Michael Caines MBE, who used to co-own the Royal Clarence Hotel today said he was gutted to see the pictures of the historic building ablaze.
He told the Daily his “heart went out” to the staff and residents as the dramatic events unfolded.
Mr Caines also said he was “angry” that the situation had apparently been allowed to escalate.
“As I understand it the fire was believed to be under control and there was even talk of people being allowed back into the hotel to collect their belongings.
“However, just minutes later the roof was ablaze and the crews had to jump back into action.
“I think questions need to be asked about why that happened. I am not pointing the finger of blame but the whole chain of events concerns me.
“The fire service do a fanastic job but I'm wondering if we have enough resources, training and expertise to cope with major incidents. You hear of cuts to the service and then when you see what's happened today it makes you start to wonder about all of that."
Mr Caines said he spent 15 happy years at the hotel and had a lot of fond memories of the building.
“It’s horrible to see the images coming in and to think about how much damage the fire and all that water is doing to such a historic Exeter property.
“My heart goes out to the staff and current owners. It is truly horrible what has happened.”
Mr Caines is currently working on opening a new hotel and restuarant near Lympstone as well as a number of TV projects.
