Monterey Pop Festival: 50 Years to the Day
A brave and exciting new concept is launching in Exeter this month.
Think Secret Cinema meets the Summer Of Love and you wont go too far wrong!
A FESTIVAL THAT CHANGED THE WORLD...
Two years before Woodstock, on the weekend of 17th June 1967, 90,000 groovies, soul cats and of course hippies brought their idealistic messages of love ‘n peace to the County Fairgrounds Park in Monterey, California. Semi-clad (and fully-high) young sprites crammed into the Arena to witness one of the major cultural turning points of the 20th Century.
That weekend, the world was introduced to a whole host of legends-to-be: including performances from The Jimi Hendrix Experience (complete with guitar-burning finale), Janis Joplin, Otis Redding (who died just months afterwards), The Who, The Grateful Dead, The Mamas & Papas, Jefferson Airplane, The Byrds, Simon & Garfunkel, The Animals, Ravi Shanker and many more. It is no overstatement to say it changed the course of popular music and alternative culture forever. What’s more, The Summer Of Love had officially begun...
THE FILM
The concert was filmed and multi-track recorded on the latest kit by the now-legendary, honorary Oscar-winning documentary maker D.A. Pennebaker (Don’t Look Back, Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars), and has only recently been beautifully remastered with crystal clear sound and vision . And what a thing of beauty it is too... Time to turn back the clock... and TURN UP THE VOLUME!
THE EVENT
On Saturday 17th June 2017, exactly 50 years later, we step back in time and celebrate these incredible performances once again with a whole evening immersive, psychedelic joy at The Phoenix in Exeter.
The screening is presented unseated like a proper gig - this is a concert and a party, not a popcorn affair! The big screen and immense Funktion:One sound rig will host full sets from The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Otis Redding, also featuring tracks from Janis Joplin, The Who, Simon & Garfunkel, Mamas & Papas and more.
The extensive decor, actors, musicians, and other surprises will help transport you back to the fabled era of innocence, Otis’ favourite soul food will be on the sun terrace BBQ, Electric Koolade Acid(free) Cocktails will be in long supply at the bar, and a few surprises.
Bring: Your finest billowing paisley shirts, dubious facial hair, bejeweled headbands, golden pants, Northern Soul and Mod clobber (this is the UK not San Fran, after all), tambs and guitars (jamming welcome!), strong opinions about Hendrix b-sides, no opinions on Hendrix B-sides.
Don't bring: Secret stashes of cynicism. Any found will be confiscated and returned after the show.
“Monterey: 50 Years To The Day” has proudly teamed up with media partner Shindig Magazine, the country’s finest psychedelic & vintage rock mag.
