Suffragettes reenact historic march at Parliament feminist lobby

 

(NewsPoint) –A group of women dressed as suffragettes, including Emmeline Pankhurst's great-granddaughter, marched on Parliament on Wednesday as part of 'Femlobby'. More than one hundred years since the suffragettes marched on Parliament in the fight for women's votes, Kat Banyard, author and founder of UK Feminista, explained that: “Too often the issue of women's rights and sexism is left off the agenda and only by us all taking action will we make sure it's put back there and that we see the advances that we so desperately need...What we'll be doing on Wednesday is putting feminism and women's rights back where they belong, at the heart of government.”

 

Over 200 women and met attended the lobby at parliament, meeting with their MPs to call for action on gender equality. Those at the event called on MPs to stop a growing tide of attacks on women’s rights including the disproportionate and disastrous impact of government cuts on women’s equality and moves to restrict access to abortion. Lobbyists also demanded a range of actions by their MPs to tackle violence against women; improve the representation of women across society; promote equality in the economy, work and family; and ensure justice and rights for women.
