Mary of Exeter, the hero pigeon who wouldn’t give up

A new animated film commemorating the bravery of a World War Two hero pigeon is being premiered in Exeter this November.

'Mary of Exeter' has been created by young people in collaboration with Double Elephant Print Workshop, a leading local arts organisation. The project was made possible by National Lottery players through a grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

It celebrates the largely forgotten tale of Mary, a brave bird who flew for the National Pigeon Service and was housed in the pigeon loft of boot maker Cecil Brewer on West Street in Exeter.

Racing stars team up for A Question of Racing on Haldon Gold Cup day

LOVE Devon, the fundraising arm of the charity Devon Communities Together, and Exeter Racecourse have teamed up to create the first A Question of Racing on Haldon Gold Cup Day, Tuesday November 5.

A star-studded panel includes record-breaking Devon born-and-bred female jockeys Bryony Frost and Lizzie Kelly, Philip Hobbs, David Pipe and Joe Tizzard, who rode the winner of the Gold Cup three times.

They will face questions from the BBC’s David Fitzgerald, including what happened next, home and away questions, the picture board, one-minute round and the buzzer round.

Network Rail invites local schools to decorate Dawlish sea wall hoardings

Network Rail is inviting Dawlish schoolchildren to take part in an art competition that will brighten up hoardings around the new sea wall works at Colonnade underpass, close to Dawlish station. Winning pictures, based on the theme ‘What Dawlish means to me’, will be reproduced on the hoardings, remaining in place until the works are complete in spring 2020.
