So the new decade is here at last. As the clocks chimed midnight on December 31st there were plenty of us hoping that the new year would also ring in the end of discord and herald a future in which Brexit would no longer dominate in the way it had for the previous three years.

One particular area that felt its effects has been the property market so there have been many hopes pinned on the possibility that the sluggish performance of 2019 could be reversed as we head into the 2020s.

Paignton Zoo is sad to announce that senior male lion Lucifer has had to be put to sleep.

Zoo spokesperson Phil Knowling: “Lucifer was 17 years old, so he was a good age for an Asiatic lion. He was, like a lot of us, showing signs of wear and tear on his body. He had some weakness and ataxia – that’s wobbliness in his hind limbs – he would stagger occasionally, especially when going up and down steps, and often stumble.”

The new year represents a momentous occasion in the history of Exeter College, marking 50 years since being named as the UK’s first tertiary college, although their roots date back to the 1800s.

Exeter College was established as a fully-fledged tertiary college in 1970, providing an education centrepiece for the community. Football comes to Exeter Racecourse

Football comes to the races on Tuesday, January 14 when Exeter Racecourse teams up with Exeter City Football Club for a day out on Haldon Hill.

Season ticket holders for the club, known as the Grecians, are being offered free entry, while in the hospitality boxes will be supporters who will be able to meet first-team players.

Let’s get a couple of minor niggles out of the way first.

Niggle number one: Our starters were delivered to the wrong table, where a pair of casually-dressed young chaps gleefully accepted them, despite the fact the food wasn’t what they ordered.

You’d be right to expect that annoyed me no end but I, in fact, forgave the minor misdemeanour, because one of the recipients was my old mate, Radio Exe DJ Ashley Jeary, who looks like he could do with a good meal, or two, or maybe three.

Passenger numbers increase on enhanced bus service

The CONNexIONS service updated and replaced the service 56 in October 2018. Between then and October last year, the service has been used by over 220,000 passengers. That’s up from almost 165,000 on service 56 in the previous year – an increase of over 33%.
