Exeter scientist wins world’s biggest science communication competition

A University of Exeter scientist has won FameLab International, a global competition to find the best new science communicators.

Marine biologist Tim Gordon progressed through preliminary rounds and regional finals earlier this year, before winning the UK final of FameLab at the Cheltenham Science Festival on Monday. Judge Dr Vivienne Parry OBE described his presentation as “authentic, honest and absolutely passionate about his subject”, and he was awarded £3,000 as the national champion.

Families in Devon are invited to enjoy some fast-paced fun at a performance of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves on Friday 14 June at 6.30pm in a beautiful location between Crediton and Barnstaple.

The professional open-air performance, by award-winning Illyria, takes place in the picturesque grounds of Eggesford Barton (EX18 7QU) near Chulmleigh.

A leading climate scientist has been appointed MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Professor Richard Betts , of the Met Office Hadley Centre and the University of Exeter, has been recognised for “services to understanding climate change”.

Professor Betts’ work has included cutting-edge research on climate change and advising governments as a lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and public engagement such as appearances on the BBC, ITV and at the Glastonbury Festival. Diabetes Week is taking place from 10 to 16 June 2019 and aims to increase the public’s understanding of diabetes. Diabetes UK Exeter group is running a coffee morning and raffle in Topsham on 11 June and an awareness day on 15 June in Bedford Square, Exeter in conjunction with Exeter Lions.
