Chiefs thwarted in nail-biter

Exeter’s hopes of becoming the first-ever side to lift back-to-back LV= Cup titles were thwarted at the death as Ben Spencer kicked a last-gasp penalty to give Saracens victory in a thrilling encounter in Northampton.

Having battled their way back from 20-6 down midway through the second half, the Chiefs were ultimately denied when the former Ivybridge Community College student punished Greg Bateman’s late indiscretion with a pressure kick.

It was a heart-breaking moment for the defending champions, who having led 6-3 at the break thanks to two penalties from skipper Ceri...

Why not forage for wild food this spring?

If you look closely the small signs and signals of spring are all around. Like a faintly warmer breeze or the scent of the air in the morning. Quills of emerald wild garlic, crisp and perfumed, blanketing the floors of our woodland. Our Devon long banks begin to bite with nettles and dying ferns uncurl young growth all around us.

For me it’s a promising time to be cooking and I’m really looking forward to all the joys of spring. The asparagus, the early broad bean tops, St George's mushrooms, crisp radish, young carrots and sea kale.

It’s a time to venture outdoors again,...

Report highlights pensions concerns

A major new report published by the International Longevity Centre-UK (ILC-UK) and sponsored by Aviva, provides the first detailed exploration of what certain choices made at the point of retirement today could mean for overall levels of retirement income over the next 30 years

The report, “Here today, gone tomorrow” models the outcomes of four different approaches to using DC pension wealth: 1) annuitising, 2) blowing the pot on big ticket items, 3) putting everything into a savings account and 4) leaving the fund invested.

It utilises data from the largest survey of the...

Exeter City win at Cheltenham

Match report: Cheltenham 1 Exeter City 2

Exeter City claimed a first ever win at Whaddon Road, with Tom Nichols and Graham Cummins striking in a 2-1 win for the Grecians against Cheltenham Town.

Nichols’ deft finish gave Exeter a midway through the first-half, and Cummins was alive to a goalkeeper spillage to firm up the scoreline a few minutes from time.

A late own-goal gave the Robins hope but ultimately City held out to claim the victory.

With Alex Nicholls missing completely through injury and Clinton Morrison only fit enough for the bench, David Wheeler...

Game on for Honiton's petanque pitch

East Devon District Council has been working hard with Honiton Town Council and local resident Chris Bigmore on a project that has ended up providing residents with a new petanque 'terrain' or playing area. Petanque is a game where players throw metal ‘boules’ with the aim of getting as many of their own closer to the wooden Jack than their opponents.

The Petanque terrain at the Mountbatten Sports and Social Club was officially opened on 19 March by the Devon Regional President of the English Petanque Association, John Thatcher. Several residents who were already playing Petanque...

Exeter residents are effectively leaving their homes open to burglary via a naïve attitude to social media, a study had found today.

Personal information, crucial for burglars in selecting target properties, is being posted on social media accounts through status updates, photographs, and location tags.

Almost half of the South West social media users could be broadcasting their address, routine and possessions to burglars, by choosing not to privatise their social profiles, meaning potentially anyone online can view what they are doing and where they are.

44% of...
