Exeter residents warned of council tax scam

People in Exeter are being warned about a telephone ‘council tax’ scam.

A number of residents have been contacted by a caller pretending to be from the City Council. The caller has then told the person that they are due a refund on their council tax due to a historic band reduction, asking for their bank details so that the money can be paid into their account.

Exeter City Council said today that the calls were a hoax and no-one should pass on their bank details to these callers.

Honour for Cathedral stonemason

Chris Sampson, who is responsible for overseeing all the conservation and building work at Exeter Cathedral has been awarded the highest honour his profession boasts - that of the title ‘Master Mason’.

Exeter to get its own Monopoly edition

Since the beginning of last month the public has been voting in their many thousands for one of the West Country’s five capital cities to have their very own MONOPOLY for this year.

And Exeter has emerged triumphant, with the announcement being made today at Exeter’s Guildhall.

Devon’s capital city saw off the capitals of Cornwall, Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire in the poll.

Exeter commanded 34.3% of the vote ahead of Dorchester (26.1%), Taunton (15.3%); Trowbridge (14.7%) and Truro (9.6%).

Litter increase on our beaches

Piles of wet wipes are littering our beaches as more people choose to use moist cloths to remove make-up, replace traditional toilet paper and apply fake tan. According to the latest beach litter data collected by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) and published today in its Great British Beach Clean report, numbers of wet wipes found on beaches increased by over 50% in a single year!
