The Exeter Community Centre Trust is launching its Past Present Future Project and is seeking volunteers.

"You’ll ideally be from the area and have some time to spend talking with residents old and new and supporting us to record and build an archive of material to contribute to the project. We’ll be offering interview...

Green spaces may boost wellbeing for city dwellers

New research published in the journal Psychological Science has found that people living in urban areas with more green space tend to report greater wellbeing than city dwellers that don’t have parks, gardens, or other green space nearby. The research has been led by Dr Mathew White from the University of Exeter Medical School’s European Centre for Environment & Human Health. By examining data from a national survey that followed UK households over time, Dr White and colleagues at the European Centre have found that individuals reported less mental distress and higher life satisfaction...

The JMO Day of Dance celebrates Morris dancing in Exeter

Visitors to Exeter City Centre on Saturday (20 April) were in for a treat and could not fail to have noticed one of the many Morris dancing groups joyfully jingling their bells, shaking their handkerchiefs and clacking their sticks (apologies if there is a more technical term that I am unaware of) in celebration of the JMO Day of Dance. Hosted by the Exeter-based Great Western Morris on behalf of the Morris Federation, approximately 40 teams from three affiliations joined together to dance at around 12 sites within the city, delighting crowds of onlookers from the very young to the young...

Chiefs on top form against London Wasps

London Wasps 24 - Exeter Chiefs 37

On the day when 35,000 runners took to the streets of London for the annual marathon, Exeter Chiefs showed little sign of fatigue as they produced arguably their best display of the season to keep alive their hopes of Heineken Cup rugby again next season.

While hosts London Wasps withered in the heat of a pulsating battle, Rob Baxter’s men duly rose to the occasion claiming maximum reward from an oustanding display at Adams Park. Tries from Jack Yeandle, Jack Nowell, Damian Welch and Haydn Thomas, together with 17 points from the boot of...

Over 1,000 seabirds now feared dead

A week after the first reports of birds covered in a sticky glue-like substance being washed up on South West beaches, wildlife charities have today confirmed that the number of dead has passed 1,000. This is in addition to the 200-plus birds in the care of the RSPCA and South Devon Seabird Trust.

The substance has been identified as polyisobutene (PIB) by researchers at Plymouth University. It is the second time in just three months that PIB has killed hundreds of seabirds in the South West.

In this latest incident birds have been found in a wide area from Dodman Point to...

Films document the birth of Cranbrook

East Devon District Council has released the first of four short internet films which are being made about the new community of Cranbrook. The first film which is available to download or view from East Devon’s website and can be found on YouTube, is a short overview about Cranbrook. Set on the day Cranbrook first opened its doors to the public, the film takes a look inside some of the show homes, views Cranbrook from the air and celebrates the achievements of 15 years of meticulous planning. Leader of East Devon District Council, Cllr Paul Diviani said “We decided to commission this piece...

EDDC signs up to Sustainable Communities Act

East Devon District Council is committed to taking up the opportunities offered by the Sustainable Communities Act.

Although councils do not have a legal duty to support the Act, EDDC has chosen to do so, as it did in 2009, and it is now looking for residents’ help in putting forward proposals for action to central Government.

The Sustainable Communities Act aims to divert power and funding from central government and passes it to councils and local people, giving them a new opportunity to improve their local communities.

Ideas about what government could change to...

Cranbrook education campus gets thumbs-up

A new education campus with two schools and a host of other community facilities at Cranbrook has been given the thumbs-up – and it should be open within two years.

East Devon District Council has approved a planning application for Devon County Council’s proposal for a secondary school and a second primary school in the new town. The schools are scheduled to open by September 2015.

The agreed application proposes construction of a 420 place primary school and a 1,000 place secondary school in a three-storey building with flexible and changeable space that will adapt as the...

Devon and Cornwall magistrates urged to impose fewer prison sentences

Magistrates in Devon and Cornwall are more than twice as likely to send someone to prison as courts in other parts of the country, figures obtained by the Howard League for Penal Reform reveal today (22 April).

New research by the charity shows that people who have been convicted of a crime in England and Wales face a postcode lottery when they are sentenced.

A growing number of magistrates’ benches are making good use of community sentences which reduce crime and help people to turn their lives around.

However, some benches are still imposing prison sentences in...
