Big Breakfast raises big bucks for charity

FORCE, a local cancer charity, held a ‘Great Devon Breakfast’ at St Olaves Hotel in Exeter and over 50 people from the local business community joined the organisers to help raise vital funds for the charity.

The event, hosted by Gilbert Stephens LLP, kick started the law firm's charity partnership with FORCE and the breakfast event raised over £400.

More farmers battle TB as new figures show 3,000 cows are culled in one month

The number of cattle slaughtered because of TB has risen again this month bringing the total number of cattle culled to 186,664 (from January 2008 – Jan 2013 in Great Britain). In the latest up-to-date figures released on 17 April by Defra, 3,215 cattle were slaughtered across Great Britain in January, meaning a 24.2 per cent increase on the same time last year, and the month-on-month figures also show a jump. Naqelevuki signs new two-year contract with the Chiefs

Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter has spoken of his delight after it was confirmed today that Fijian international Sireli Naqelevuki has committed his future to the Aviva Premiership club.

The 32-year-old back follows the lead of a number of his current club-mates in agreeing a new two-year contract.

Naqelevuki, who joined the Chiefs in the summer of 2010 from South African Super Rugby outfit, the Stormers, has settled well to life in England and has been a prominent figure in helping the Devon club cement their place amongst English rugby’s top clubs.

Spitfires ready for start of the baseball season

Exeter's new baseball team, the Spitfires, are getting set for their first game in the South West Baseball league. Following several weeks of indoor and outdoor training with their qualified coaches, the team head to Plymouth this Sunday to take on the reigning league champions the Mariners. The team's first home game is on 12 May against Bristol Bats.

Devon Community Foundation welcoming cycle in Devon this weekend

Devon Community Foundation are looking forward to welcoming Calderdale Community Foundation this weekend when they are passing through the county as part of their 906 mile Land’s End to John O’Groats bike ride raising money for young apprenticeships.

The Cycle4Work campaign, which has so far raised more than £95,000, is being lead by Calderdale Community Foundation’s CEO Steve Duncan along with a team of seven cyclists coming from a variety of sporting and ‘not-so-sporting’ backgrounds. Exeter City football coaches go for shorter distance with London Marathon

Two of Exeter City’s Football in the Community coaches, Dan Leverton and Jack Gill, are preparing to run the London Marathon on Sunday - and while most people build up to the 26.2-mile distance in training, Dan and Jack have done things rather differently.

The last time they completed a distance run was in Princesshay in February, when they ran on a treadmill for 24 hours to raise money for the Meningitis Trust, a cause close to their hearts after the death of their friend and team-mate, Paul Cridland, seven years ago at the age of 18.

Welfare benefit enquiries up by 11% in Exeter

Local charity Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau today publishes its annual advice trend statistics, which show that it helped 3,244 people directly with advice on 15,349 problems in the financial year ending 31 March 2013.

The charity helped clients with a debt burden of £6.1m, up by 27.5% or £1.3m from the previous year.

There was an 11% increase in enquiries about welfare benefits and tax credits; such as employment and support allowance, disability living allowance and problems with housing benefit and council tax benefit. On average, each client receiving specialist advice...
