FSB report suggests tentative signs of growing optimism among small businesses

Small firms' confidence has increased, but their investment intentions have fallen as the domestic economy and access to finance act as a barrier to growth, show the results from the quarter one 2013 ‘Voice of Small Business' Index from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB). The report, which surveyed 2,686 people in the first quarter of 2013 showed a welcome increase in confidence, moving from a negative reading of -5.6 in Q4 2012 to +6.3 in the first quarter of 2013. However, this optimism was tempered with caution as fewer businesses expect to grow this year – down from 56 per cent...

Mantel defends her comments about Kate

Budliegh Salterton-based novelist Hilary Mantel has defended her controversial comments about the Duchess of Cambridge.

The writer had been quoted as saying the duchess was a "shop-window mannequin" whose only purpose was to breed.

But she told BBC Radio 3's Night Waves programme that her words had been taken out of context.

Mantel said her speech had clearly been addressing a perception of Catherine that had been created in the mediawhen she decribed her as "gloss-varnished" with a perfect plastic smile, and having no personality.

Routine win over Totnes for undefeated Exmouth

EXMOUTH TOWN 3-0 TOTNES & DARTINGTON

Exmouth strolled to yet another comfortable victory against their visitors in the South West Peninsular Division One this afternoon. The two sides had met twice this season already - a 4-0 Exmouth league win in Totnes and a 5-1 home thrashing by Town in the cup.
