Exeter student strikes gold with physics display in Parliament

Claire Woollacott, 24, a PhD Postgraduate Research Student from the School of Physics at the University of Exeter, struck gold at a competition in the House of Commons for excellence in her physics research, walking away with a £3,000 prize.

Claire presented her research, which could open new horizons in ultrafast electronic devices, to dozens of politicians and a panel of expert judges, as part of the poster competition SET for Britain, on Monday 18 March 2013.

Fire crews rescue drivers from flood water in Devon

Motorists have been rescued from their cars after more heavy rain deluged the county.

Traffic control teams also reported several landslips and a road collapse in Devon.

Fire crews rescued people from cars in Teigngrace and Sidmouth and in Colyford one person was rescued after being found on top of their vehicle in 2ft of flood water.

St James' Road in Exeter was this morning closed in both directions between the Oxford Road junction and the Old Tiverton Road junction, because of a landslip.*

World Water Day highlights the importance of clean water and sanitation

Today is annual World Water Day, a specific day designated by the United Nations to focus on the importance of clean water for drinking and sanitation.

Each year, during a ceremony at the Hague in the Netherlands, the UN-Water Award is given to reward efforts to fulfill international commitments made on water and water-related issues. Special emphasis is given to the World Water Day theme when giving the awards; this year’s theme is ‘Water Cooperation’.

Sponsored Sleepover Raises £23,000 for Exeter's YMCA

A sponsored sleep out in Exeter city centre on Saturday night raised over £23,000 for Exeter YMCA’s work with local homeless young people.

180 people took part in the sleep out, called ‘Sleep Easy’, battling against lows of three degrees Celsius and torrential rain. Participants included six members from the Gilbert Stephens Young Professional Network who raised over £1,000 for the charity. Gilbert Stephens were also the main sponsors of the event.

Devon County Council Elections coming up in May

The next local elections will take place on Thursday 2 May. Nearly 600,000 people will be eligible to vote on who will lead Devon County Council and be responsible for key local services for the next four years.

Devon County Council is the largest local authority in the South West with a total budget of over £1bn annually. It is divided into 62 electoral divisions. The Councillors voted in to these seats will each represent an average of 10,000 people.

Woman killed in serious road traffic collision on A39 near to Kilkhampton

At around 7.15am on Friday 22 March 2013 a serious road traffic collision took place involving two vehicles. Police have confirmed that the driver of the silver VW Polo, a woman in her forties from the Bude area, has been declared deceased at the scene by paramedics. Her next of kin have been informed but other family members are yet to be told.

A man, understood to be in his early forties and from the Bideford area, who was driving a Ford Maverick was air-lifted to Derriford hospital in Plymouth where he is said to be stable and not thought to have life-threatening injuries....
